Listen

[wpvideo LHNhFS2T]

This week choose one person you would not normally listen to and listen to them as they answer this question: tell me your story? What led up to this moment in your life? And then share that experience. Tweet about it. Facebook about it. Blog about it. E-mail someone. Spread the word about the unique experience of listening.

    Hey Carissa,

Thanks for reposting this today and I appreciate your comment. I’m excited to hear your experience of listening to someone you normally would not think or have the chance to listen to. Love to hear what happens!!

LOVE it! I always find it amusing when I’m having a conversation with a talkative person and they get that zoned-out look on their face while I’m talking. I just know they aren’t listening and are really formulating what they’re going to say next. Their nostrils flare, their breathing changes, and you can almost see their breath when they exhale in relief when I’m finished and they jump into what they’ve been holding in to say. :) I hope some of them read this. And, of course, I will make sure to listen, too.

Good timing once again with your theme for the week:) I have a cold, so can’t talk much this week without coughing and last night after Ingite, Jessie and I had a good “talk” about how it bugs us when we’re talking to someone and they really aren’t paying attention to us (similar to what Diane Grins described above). I’m trying to learn from Jessica’s example, how to listen better. She’s the best listener in the world, and she knows what it feels like to not be “heard”. I’m inspired once again to be more Godly:) Becky

totally agree with this. i think everyone should take improv classes… it will teach you to listen to the other person so you can react to what they’re saying rather than think of what to say next while they’re talking.

    D Grins,
Thanks for taking the time to check this out and for your words. Great thoughts. I totally know what you mean. There is a great line from the film and novel “Fight Club” that gets at that point,
“When people think you’re dying they really listen… instead of… instead of just waiting for their turn to speak.”

    Chrissy,
Thanks so much for always participating in the dialogue. I always appreciate your feedback and participation!! Plus I love you!

    Becky,
Your daughter Jessie is an amazing listener. I think it is awesome that you are open to learning from your children. So many parents can learn from your example. I know in youth ministry I have learned so much from my students. Right on! Thanks for your words and for sharing. I hope your cold gets better soon, and I hope listening week has gone well for you!

    Moudy,
Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a comment. I really appreciate your thoughts. I took an improv class in middle school and did some on the side in college. You are exactly right! Improv really does teach you to fully engage the words of others. The people who are too busy thinking about their next line are the ones that fail. Great thoughts!
